Why SIMPEP Learning? A Father's Answer to One Question

Every product worth building starts with a real problem. SIMPEP Learning started with mine.

A little over a year ago, my child was heading toward PEP, the Primary Exit Profile, and like most parents in Jamaica I wanted to give my child the best possible chance. For anyone who is not close to it yet, PEP is the national assessment that replaced the Grade Six Achievement Test back in 2018. It is not a single exam. It is a series of assessments made up of a Performance Task, an Ability Test, and Curriculum-Based Tests in Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. Together they build a profile of where a child stands and how ready they are for high school.

So I did what most parents do. I went looking for help. I downloaded and tried several of the applications built for PEP preparation. Some of them were genuinely good. But something kept bothering me. Almost every one of them still taught the way I was taught fifty years ago. Read this, memorize that, answer these questions, repeat. The content had been updated for PEP, but the method had not moved an inch.

That was the moment SIMPEP Learning was born, first as a personal project for one child, and then as something bigger.

The name says the mission out loud. SIMPEP Learning simply means making PEP simple. Not easier in the sense of watering it down, but simpler in the sense of removing the fear, the friction, and the dread that so many children attach to exam preparation. I wanted my child to sit down to study and not feel like it was a punishment.

If you take one thing from this first post, take this. SIMPEP Learning did not come out of a business plan. It came out of a kitchen table, a worried parent, and one stubborn question that would not leave me alone. If technology has changed how our children play, talk, and see the world, why has it not truly changed how they learn?
